The Big Move: How to Let the World Know

Moving day – done, dusted. Now it’s time to let the world know that you’ve made it to your new address – that includes personal contacts, utility companies, doctors, dentists and the list goes on (and on and on, if you’ve just moved your York business). Here we make this humongous task a little easier, with three simple steps.

1. First things first: Set up a catch-all post forwarding

Don’t even attempt to send out a mass mail to every single contact and utility company – opt for a temporary mail redirect from Royal Mail. Priced from £5.25 a month, and with the option to set up the service for 3, 6 or 12 months, this will ensure all of your mail reaches you at your new address whilst you wrestle with the mammoth task of letting everyone know about your move – contact by contact.

2. Make a list of businesses that you need to contact

Here’s a generic list to get you started:

  • Family
  • Friends
  • Employer
  • School
  • Doctor
  • Dentist
  • Bank
  • Electoral Register
  • Building Society
  • Credit Card Companies
  • Store Card Companies
  • Insurance Companies
  • Share Registrars
  • Rental Companies
  • TV Licensing Authority (08705 246 246)
  • Royal Mail (08457 740 740)
  • Gas Company
  • Water Company
  • Electricity Company
  • Telecom Company
  • Mobile Phone Company
  • Satellite/Cable Company
  • Mailing Preference Service (0845 703 4599)
  • Inland Revenue
  • National Insurance Office (0191 213 5000)
  • Council Tax Office
  • Driver Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA)
  • Driving Licence
  • Vehicle Registration Certificate
  • Motoring Organisations
  • Opticians
  • Publications
  • Subscriptions (Magazines, Charities etc)
  • Mail Order Companies
  • Sports & Social Clubs
  • Professional Organisations

3. Create a change of address template and pop by a pile of envelopes and a pen

There may be the odd letter or two that you receive via your postal redirect from a company or contact who you haven’t included in the list for step two. Make contacting these businesses and individuals fast and easy by printing off a generic letter that you can add your details to, and leave a pile alongside a pen and some envelopes.

Here’s a template that you can edit and print.
