York and romance – Six perfect days out for couples

York – it’s a stunning city of architecture, entertainment and art. Steeped in history and brimming with restaurants, attractions and shops, it’s safe to say that there’s more than a fair share for things to see and do for the loved-up couple, and here we want to share six of the very best.

1. Travel in by steam train

All aboard! What better way to begin your whistle stop tour of all that York has to offer, than by taking a truly romantic steam train? Starting and finishing in the centre of York, you’ll be guided through local history by way of audio guide and travel in comfort. Stops include market towns such as Helmsley, the North York Moors National Park, Whitby, and filming locations in Goathland which were used for the Harry Potter films.

2. Walk along the wall of York

Dating back over 2000 years, the York City Wall spans some two miles. Featuring two ornate gatehouses, this wall was built throughout the Roman era, the Dark Ages, and the Viking and medieval periods.

3. Breezy Knees Gardens

Love nature? Then Breezy Knees Gardens is a must visit. With more than 6000 variants of flowers, shrubs, and trees, this attraction serves up natural wonders aplenty. However, with more than 5.7 hectares to explore, it’s recommended that you set aside a minimum of 2.5 hours to see it all.

4. York Minster

The largest gothic cathedral to the north of the Alps, York Minster is a place of atmosphere and impressive views over York’s charming streets.

Just make sure you take a walk round to the Great West side to view the heart-shaped window; this is affectionately known as the ‘Heart of Yorkshire’. Legend would have it that those who kiss underneath this window become destined to stay together for eternity.

5. York Art Gallery

From contemporary art to the distinctly antique, York Art Gallery features everything from ceramics to glassware. This is the perfect place for lovers who also love art. And if you and your better half are both dedicated culture vultures you may want to read our blog about York culture spots.

6. Champagne and cakes at Betty’s

Yum! It’s the most famous Cafe tea room in York, and it’s also the perfect place to finish your attraction-packed day of romance! Couples have been coming here since 1936 – and the Queen Mary ocean liner-inspired interior is quite something to behold!
