The Big Move to University of York – Essential Tips

Your results are in and you’ve been unconditionally accepted. It’s official – you’re off to the University of York – a university that holds an incredibly respectable 20th place positon in the league tables, in a city steeped in history, culture and bustling with nightlife and things to do.

Settling Off To The University Of York

Before the fun can begin, however, is the mammoth task of packing up and setting off. To help you get off to a smooth start, here we present our essential packing tips.

1. Start in good time

Not only will you need to begin your packing planning early, you’ll also need to begin looking for a place to live. The majority of first year university students live in halls for the first year, and then move on elsewhere come the second year.

2. Be organised to a fault

You may only be moving a single bedroom, but the amount of stuff you own can often be bewildering once you begin packing it all up. For this, faultless organisation is needed, and if written lists and scribbled inventories aren’t your style, use one of the five moving apps we recommend.

3. Don’t just mix your items up

Once you arrive at uni you’re going to want to get unpacked as quickly and as painlessly as possible. Separating your box contents up logically will help, try using different boxes for: study materials; bathroom items; bedding; clothing and your gadgets and tech (read our blog on: House Moves – How to Take Care with Your Tech).

4. Don’t forget those little touches that remind you of home

University life is exciting, no doubt about it, but believe it or not, there will be points during which you actually miss home, so don’t forget the little touches – photos, keepsakes and music that reminds you of your good-old college days. You can also brighten up what will otherwise be a pretty dull dorm room with colourful rugs, cushions and posters (it’s the little things that make halls, home).

5. Don’t be tempted to pack everything you own

Your dorm room is going to be small, it’s simply a fact of university life. If you don’t want to be tripping over things for the upcoming academic year, and cramming things under your bed, you’re going to have to think carefully about how much you pack.

6. Purchase your cooking stuff at the other end

You’ll likely not going to transform into the next Heston Blumenthal whilst away, but you will need to be able to whip up a basic meal or two. You might want to leave your purchasing of pots, pans and spatulas until you arrive however, so you can weigh up what’s already there, what you need and save yourself some space for the journey there.
